Naples is one of the most vibrant and down-to-earth of all the Italian cities, whose ancient centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site crammed with important art and architecture. Main draws include the Duomo di Gennaro cathedral with its catacombs and frescoes; the lavish Royal Palace and the imposing 13th-century Castle Nuovo. Another must-see near the city is Vesuvius, the still-active volcano famous for destroying Pompeii.
