The Relais Cooden Beach, Cooden Sea Rd, Bexhill, Bexhill-on-Sea TN39 4TT

Bexhill-on-Sea offers entertainment of all kinds, from picture-perfect scenery to historical attractions. Stroll along the pebbly shore with an ice cream in hand, or head to nearby Pevensey to make a splash with paddleboarding and other water sports. For dramatic walks, make for Beachy Head, the chalky headland just the other side of Eastbourne, and see the striking Seven Sisters.

If it’s history that takes your fancy, head to Battle - there, you can enjoy a gentle circular walk that takes in the hotspots of the 1066 Battle of Hastings which named the town, including the abbey, the museum and the battlefield itself. Turn your eye a little inland and you’ll find a slew of castles all within a 30-minute drive - 14th-century Bodiam Castle is especially impressive. Arty types shouldn’t miss the De La Warr Pavilion; right on Bexhill Beach, the iconic Modernist building displays thought-provoking contemporary art exhibitions.
