The historic port town of Olhão is a quiet area with a local feel, but explore the region and you'll uncover some of the most impressive beaches in the Algarve. A number of world-class golf courses are nearby, as well as the Municipal Markets, which sell fresh seafood and native fruits (well worth a visit if you plan to stock your lovely kitchen). The Ria Formosa - a protected natural park made up of sand dunes, lagoons and islets - is one of the most tranquil spots around, while busier Faro town is a bus ride away for atmospheric evenings in tapas bars and seafood restaurants.
