How to get there

From Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, drive 124 kilometres north to Harlingen and then take one of the daily ferries over to Terschelling for a couple of hours. From Terschelling port, it's a five-minute drive or 20-minute walk to the apartments (the hotel provides a free luggage transport service from the port). This offer also incudes return transfers from the ferry port to the hotel. The whole journey takes around three hours and 40 minutes.

In the UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea conservation area, where tidal channels, sandy shoals, sea-grass meadows, mussel beds, sandbars, mudflats, salt marshes, estuaries, beaches and dunes make up a refreshing, highly unique landscape, the West Frisian Island of Terschelling is strangely only visited by Dutch and Germans in the know. In this nature-rich, people-poor land, home to seals and purpoises and awash with sought-after tranquillity, you can truly recharge body and soul. The island is threaded with walking and cycling trails too.

After sampling the island's special cranberries, engage in a spot of 'wadlopen' - mudflat hiking. Aided by a guide with a tide timetable (this is important), you can walk across the mudflats from Terschelling to the Frisian mainland, or island-hop on foot even. You can also dip into traditional island life at Museum 't Behouden Huys, go bird-spotting at the spacious De Boschplaat nature reserve at the eastern end of the island or or join others doing sailing and kite surfing. The 16th-century Brandaris Lighthouse is the oldest in the Netherlands.
