Contrada Masseria Bianca, SP323, 73014 Gallipoli LE, Italy

Gallipoli languishes almost at the very tip of the heel of Italy’s ‘boot’, on the western coast of Puglia lapped by crystalline waters. The ancient, sun-bleached centre is set off the mainland on an island accessed by a wide causeway, where there are 13th- and 14th-century ruins brushing up against cafes, restaurants, hotels, Baroque churches and crumbling palazzi, all enclosed by thick defensive walls. The seafront promenade is where well-dressed Italians take the obligatory passeggiata before dinner.

Outside of Gallipoli, the Salento countryside stretches east and is waiting to be explored. Puglia’s red earth and ancient olive trees envelop whitewashed towns and villages, like beautiful, Baroque Lecce, known as the ‘Florence of the South’. The beaches in this part of Italy are spectacular, such as La Spiaggia della Purita, a golden curve of sand outside Gallipoli’s city walls, and the soft, Caribbean-esque sandy swathes of Rivabella.
