Carrer de Charles Rivel 6-8, 08328 Alella, near Barcelona, Spain

Beetling into Barca couldn't be easier via a half-hour train ride. Once there, you can settle into the sand for a spot of city sunning or mosey along La Rambla - the city's most iconic thoroughfare with its pedestrianised middle lane home to flower-sellers, buskers, ambling tourists and plenty of people-watchers on the benches. It'd be a Catalan crime not to visit one or more of Gaudí's urban masterpieces, from the fairy-tale wackiness of UNESCO-listed Casa Battló to the jaw-dropping Gothic and Art Nouveau dream of La Sagrada Familia.

Closer to your stylish abode, Playa Masnou beach is a more than worthy hangout for lazy days. You're also in historic wine-making territory here, where Cava one ruled the roost and now a variety of grapes pitch themselves for the trophy. A wine tasting day trip via car or bike among the boutique hillside wineries is a fine idea for oenophiles. Active types should explore the Parc de la Serralada de Marina looming nearby, for hiking and mountain biking.
