Lucerne

Drink in stunning alpine scenery and calming lake vistas on your multiple train rides between Geneva, Montreux, and Lucerne - includes breakfast, two hotel stays, cheese and chocolate factory visits, the famous GoldenPass train ride, and flights

Day 1: Geneva - Montreux

You'll land at Geneva Airport and take a beautiful train ride beneath towering mountains around Lake Geneva to Montreux, lasting around an hour and 40 minutes. The lakeside resort of Montreux has been drawing visitors to its heavenly waters for many centuries, including creatives like Lord Byron and the Shelleys, and it's still the place to come for some rest and relaxation. Spend leisurely mornings meandering the lake shore, walk up to the Old Town on the hill, or peruse Friday morning's market.

Day 2: Montreux - Chocolate Train

A day of gourmand delight awaits, on the most sumptuous (and suitably scenic) train ride of your life, the legendary Chocolate Train up from Montreux to Broc. You'll breakfast with coffee and pain au chocolat on board First Class before transferring onto a bus to the Maison du Gruyère to discover all there is about this most famous of Swiss cheeses. Wander around the charming, medieval town of Gruyères, perhaps visiting its castle (surcharge), before bravely forging on to the elegant Maison Cailler chocolate factory in Broc. You'll sample the creations of Switzerland's oldest chocolate brand, before returning via bus to Montreux. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 3: Montreux - Lucerne

More heavenly alpine vistas steal the show today on your GoldenPass train ride from Montreux to Lucerne. You'll travel on three trains; on the first train from Montreux to Zweisimmen, you'll glide past forests, mountain springs and pretty mountain villages, whose names change from French into German as you enter the Saanenland region. Changing trains at Zweisimmen, you'll steam along next to Lake Thun into the Bernese Oberland region, with its traditional painted chalets with elaborately carved façades. Changing again at Interlaken Ost, your brand new, panoramic train whizzes you past Lake Brienz and the foaming Giessbach falls towards Lucerne, where your mesmerising journey ends. Check into your Lucerne hotel on arrival. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 4: Lucerne

Lucerne is a gorgeous lakeside city brimming with preserved medieval architecture and snow-capped mountains. Your hotel sits charmingly right in the middle of it all, making it an ideal base to uncover the city’s gems, from the Old Town and Chapel Bridge to the cobalt lake and candy-coloured houses. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 5: Lucerne - Zurich - UK

Today you'll make the journey to Zurich via train, and from here fly back to the UK. (Meals: breakfast)
