An off the beaten track holiday to the Shetland Islands, staying at a boutique hotel with award-winning dining in Scalloway - includes flights and breakfast
The Shetland Islands are the most northerly point in the United Kingdom, with their nearest neighbours 50 miles south across the North Sea. This isolated outcrop of over 100 islands is a magical, rural and often wildly peaceful place to visit. The landscape is dramatic, with rocky headlands breaking through the waves, and a coastline to rival it’s Arctic neighbours Iceland and Greenland - you may even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights from September onwards. Fairly mild climes mean that stunning flora and fauna can be found here, and the terrain is a dream for anyone who enjoys a spot of hiking, biking, birdwatching or animal-spotting.
Scalloway Hotel sits on the waterfront, overlooking the East Voe of Scalloway. This family-run, boutique hotel has won many an award, including gaining first place in its region for Informal Fine Dining Hotel and Bar Dining Hotel in the 2018 Scottish Hotel Awards and Independent Hotelier of the Year for its region in the 2016 Scottish Hotel Awards. On top of this, it boasts a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, and the restaurant was the first restaurant in Shetland to be awarded two AA Rosettes.
Sample delicious regional dishes that showcase local produce, particularly shellfish and lamb, or if you fancy something a little more low-key, head to the bar for a pint and a classic fish and chips so fresh that it ‘practically landed on the doorstep’. Bedrooms are simply but cosily decorated, with sheepskin rugs, tweed upholstery, woollen carpets and mattresses stuffed with Shetland fleece.
Budding history buffs will be in their element here; when exploring the area, you'll come across the Shetland Museum and Archives, where you can learn about the history of the island, or perhaps head further south to the archaeological sites of Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse settlements. St Magnus' Cathedral and the Bishop's and Earl's Palaces offer intricate architecture for you to admire.
Enjoying the peace and quiet of one of the UK’s most rural areas
Indulging in two AA Rosette seafood at the hotel’s restaurant, fresh from the sea
Exploring the Shetland Island’s stunning landscapes
Heading to Lerwick Harbour for some seal-spotting
