Marquis Suffolk, Upper St, Layham, Ipswich IP7 5JZ

The countryside surrounding the village of Upper Layham is one of those quaintly charming places that make you see why the county of Suffolk so inspired the artist, John Constable: bucolic scenes of gently babbling rivers and picturesque millponds, rolling vales, gently swaying fields of wheat. Take a stroll around the pink-painted thatched cottages and narrow lanes, following a network of footpaths and bridleways that peel off from the village and run along the river Brett and long-forgotten railway lines – there are plenty of pubs and cafes, should you need refreshing. For more dreamy days out, the Dedham Vale National Landscape promises vineyards, bluebell woods in the spring, nature reserves and postcard-pretty villages.

If you’d prefer a more relaxed dose of seaside charm, drive to Felixstowe, where you can stroll along the pier or relax on the sandy beach. Elsewhere, history buffs shouldn’t miss the chance to delve into England's rich past with a visit to nearby Sutton Hoo, the famous Anglo-Saxon burial ground.
