The stately retreat's past lives have included a Knights Templar estate and an Anglo-Saxon hall, but now it's a golfing hotspot and a multi-feature hotel. Snuggle up in luxuriously appointed bedrooms, snaffle afternoon tea in the gorgeous Orangery and enjoy pottering from the 18-hole golf course to the wellness area.

Accommodation

All 54 bedrooms have just benefitted from the hotel’s multi-million-pound revamp, leaving them spanking new and clean as a whistle. The hotel still retains all of its lovely Jacobean charms, but with modern additions like lightning-fast complimentary Wi-Fi and posh cushions. Rooms are outfitted in a plush, country style, with cloud-like beds and local artworks on the walls including maps of the area. Superior rooms offer 18-25sqm of space, while Deluxe rooms offer a more generous 27-31sqm with real attention to detail.

Dining

Wake up to a full English breakfast with all the classics – best bacon, eggs and sausages – with a choice of pastries, bread and fresh fruit from the buffet. Skip lunch and opt for afternoon tea in the Orangery – there are even gluten-free scones to go with your jam and cream, plus delectable cakes served on pretty patterned china. Dinner is best enjoyed at the newly refurbed 1042 Restaurant, where you’ll find refined pub grub classics like ale-battered fish and chips, hung steaks from Scottish Buccleuch farmers and local artisan cheese boards. Take in the views of the garden as you dine.

Wellness

Bring your own clubs or hire them from the hotel – Selsdon Park’s golf club was designed by JH Taylor in the 1920s and is popular with guests and locals alike. If you prefer a more sedate approach to wellness, the hotel’s swimming pool is open 8am-8pm (longer hours during the week) and offers a sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi for the ultimate relaxation. There’s also a gym, classes plus tennis and squash courts.

Location

Hidden within over 200 acres of rolling countryside in Surrey, the estate is wonderfully well connected to London with East Croydon train station fewer than four miles away – there are also serves to Gatwick every 15 minutes. Drivers will find the hotel a mere 15 minutes’ drive from the M25 motorway, with local attractions including historic Chartwell, Epsom race course and Chessington World of Adventures.
