An unforgettable self-drive adventure around New Zealand's North Island, before kicking back on Fiji's sands - including flights, shared transfers and car hire
With its volcanic peaks, rugged coasts and hot springs, it is easy to see why location scouts for the likes of The Lord of the Rings look to New Zealand for inspiration. During this self-drive adventure of North Island, you’ll find plenty of dramatic backdrops for your own holiday blockbusters.
You'll start out in Auckland, with two nights in the city centre, before jumping into your hire car and making your way to the Bay of Islands - a subtropical micro-region known for its stunning natural beauty and fascinating Maori history. With two nights in Paihia, why not explore the area's unspoilt beaches, intriguing dives sites and the Waitangi Treaty Grounds - the site where modern New Zealand was founded.
After one more night in Auckland, you'll drive on to the coastal town of Coromandel, which boasts a rich gold-mining history. Take the narrow-gauge train along Driving Creek Railway to see the pottery sculptures that pepper the route, discover Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach, or taste the region with some local wine tasting - there are plenty of ways to spend your time here.
It's on to Rotorua next, with a city centre stay for two nights. Whilst here, be sure to discover the area's geothermal properties with a trip to a Polynesian Spa; learn more about Maori culture with a visit to New Zealand Maori Arts & Crafts Institute; kayak, swim or fish on the volcanic crater-lake of Rotorua; and hike the rugged trails of Mount Tarawera.
Next, you'll drive into Tongariro National Park, for a night amidst the sacred peaks of Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro, before heading on to Wellington - New Zealand's vibrant capital city. Then, it's time to wind it right down, with a blissful five-night stay on Fiji's beautiful coastline at an oceanfront resort that's home to a tranquil spa, six swimming pools, five restaurants and a bakery.
