Santorini holidays

It’s no secret the Greek islands are a hot holiday pick every year, thanks to their golden beaches, clear skies, turquoise waters, and mouthwatering cuisine. Throw in a sea of cerulean domes and whitewashed villages clinging to the cliffside, and you’ve painted the perfect picture of Santorini. As one of the most glamorous Greek islands, famed for its romantic appeal and iconic sunsets, holidaying here can come with a high price tag.

At Secret Escapes, we’ve curated a selection of stunning hotels in Santorini at discounted prices, so you can have more luxury for less. From private suites with a Jacuzzi or a five-star spa retreat with caldera views, there’s something for every holiday-goer with our hand-picked collection of properties.

Whether you want to venture to this contemporary Greek paradise for a romantic weekend or a short break with friends, Santorini has plenty to offer. Discover our must-dos on the island, from the iconic towns to volcanic landscapes:

Hike from Fira to Oia: If you want a way to experience Santorini’s charm alongside its rugged nature, then hiking between two of its prettiest villages is a must. Start in Fira and walk along its narrow pavements, marvelling at the sea views and caldera along the way. Nine kilometres of steep hiking trails connect the two villages, fringed by red-black volcanic rock seemingly from another world.

Take a boat tour: No visit to a Greek island would be complete without sailing on clear seas. With plenty of tour companies to choose from, you’ll be cruising around Santorini’s red, white, and black-sand beaches in no time, perhaps enjoying an on-deck barbecue followed by a swim in the Aegean.

Taste Greece’s flavours on a wine tour: While the east of the island is home to dramatic cliff faces and whitewashed villages, the west is brimming with an abundance of vineyards and wineries. Thanks to its unique volcanic and mineral-rich soil (plus windy weather), the wines here are light and distinctive. Book yourself on a wine tour, and discover the family-run vineyards and vintages first-hand.

Watch a sunset: Is anything more romantic than watching the sun go down over shimmering water, a glass of wine in hand and seeing the sky change colour? Santorini’s sunsets are famous the world over, but be sure to head to the popular view points early. Oia is a firm favourite for sundown, thanks to its location at the tip of the island offering unspoiled views.

Our top tips for visiting Santorini

When's the best time to travel to Santorini?

We’d recommend visiting Santorini from late March to early June, or from early September to late October. Thanks to the island’s almost year-round sun, you can enjoy an off-season summer escape without the school crowds and peak prices.

What's the weather like in Santorini?

The weather can easily be split into two seasons. The warmer, dryer months between April and October can see highs of up to 30 degrees in September, while the colder season (November to March) sees lows of 9 degrees in January. A word of warning: the island can be quite windy, so the temperature can sometimes feel a little cooler than it is.

What’s the currency?

Like the rest of Europe, Santorini uses Euros. The majority of places are now cash-free and contactless, but it won’t hurt to have a cash reserve for emergencies and smaller businesses.

Which language is spoken in Santorini?

Greek

What important tips should I know before travelling there?

Santorini is an incredibly hilly place, so those with less mobility should make suitable arrangements before travelling. If you’re arriving by ferry, the walk up to town takes you zig-zagging up a 600-step pathway. We’d also recommend booking excursions in advance, especially in the high season, to avoid disappointment.
