Safaga Road KM 12, Hurghada, Egypt

Naturally, sunning yourself beside the salty waters of the iconic Red Sea is the order of the day in Hurghada, on the Egyptian coast, but the surrounding area has an incredible variety of life and colour beneath the waves too, so don your snorkel or diving gear to spot myriad colours and sea life beneath the sea's calm surface. Giftun Islands National Park is a wonderful marine park close to Hurghada, and five kilometers south, underwater photographers, snorkellers and divers of all abilities can access Gota Abu Ramada. If you want to stay above the surface, arrange a glass-bottomed boat ride through the hotel to glimpse kaleidoscopic marine life.

Lined with flashy yachts a 20-minute drive away, Hurghada Marina is a slick spot for evening strolls. Bargain-hunters come alive in the souq five minutes further north, seeking out shishas, silver and leather wares to take home. See the ginormous hauls of rock and stone the Romans loaded onto the Nile to take back to Rome (plus the prison cells of the unlucky workers) at Mons Claudius Roman ruins an hour and a half away.
Five-star booking service? You bet.
