• Sweet sojourn: Since the 17th century, Amsterdam’s wide, leisurely canals have been romancing visitors with their charms: the most romantic of which is undoubtedly Pillows Anna van den Vondel, a pastel-painted space with softly-lit rooms in shades of periwinkle blue, cool violet white and velvety grey. Slip into cloud-like beds for a snooze and breathe in the city’s freshest air thanks to neighbouring green space, Vondelpark.

• Smooth living: The hotel offers round-the-clock dining at The Living, where you can sit atop a stool overlooking the open kitchen or flop down on intimate banquette seating to dine on Med-inspired dishes and hearty plates. The wine list is mostly French, though the beers are understandably Dutch: Amstel, Heineken plus a few unusual choices like dense brown Trappist ale made in an abbey in Flemish Brabant.

• Sumptuous night's sleep: Small Luxury rooms have views over the gardens and the city from up in the attic, with the perfect amount of space for a short break. Bedrooms are decorated in a soft pastel palette with little eucalyptus plants to add colour and fragrance, while en-suite bathrooms have minimalist appeal and cool white fittings. A lucky few will be upgraded to a Luxury Double, should there be availability.
