Location and what's nearby

Hotel Leon d'Oro, Viale del Piave, 5, 37135 Verona VR, Italy

More than just Romeo and Juliet’s hometown, Verona is a vibrant city filled with extraordinary Romanesque architecture, Instagram-worthy bridges, palace-lined squares, and beautiful art, as well as boasting an excellent food and wine scene. Arm yourself with a 24-hour museum pass (a Verona Card) and you can hop around some of the city’s hot spots.

You're also less than two kilometres from the Arena di Verona - a huge, 1st-century Roman amphitheatre that today hosts opera performances and concerts, so try and grab a show if you can. If it’s Shakespeare’s tragic tale that draws you to fair Verona (where we lay our scene), head to Juliet’s house, stand on the balcony and call out for Romeo to your heart’s desire. Whilst you’re there, write a message to your loved ones on the wall - now a famous tradition - and pay a visit to Juliet’s bronze statue for an extra bit of romantic luck. Next up on your star-crossed lovers tour is San Zeno, an enchanting neighbourhood home to one of Italy’s oldest churches: San Zeno Maggiore. Here, you’ll find St Zeno’s crypt, believed to be the location of where Romeo and Juliet got married in Shakespeare’s heartbreaking play.

Wander around the city’s magical squares, such as Piazza delle Erbe or Piazza dei Signori, and lose yourself amongst the olde-worlde cobblestone streets. If you fancy a day trip, Verona sits at the bottom of Lake Garda - only one-hour-and-a-half drive away. The hotel is also moments from Porta Nuova train station, so you can head off on a rail adventure to one of the nearby cities: Milan, Venice and Bologna can all be reached in a bit over an hour.

Five-star booking service? You bet.
