If you find yourself looking for excitements beyond the beach, look no further than nearby Chioggia. Just 20 minutes from the hotel on foot and connected to Sottomarina by a single bridge, this historic island is sometimes known as ‘Little Venice’ thanks to its narrow streets and bridge-crossed canals. Pass through the entrance to the Renaissance heart of the city, the 14th century Porta Garibaldi, and wander past the beautiful Baroque Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Continue up the Corso del Popolo, the central street of the island, and duck into all the old churches and local museums that take your fancy. If you follow the street all the way up to Piazzetta Vigo - a small square at the north end of the island - you can even pick up a boat that cruises up the lagoon to Venice.
