There's no shortage of natural wonders and spectacular scenery in South America, and Ecuador holds a vivid variety. This trip takes you island-hopping between the colourful fauna of the must-see Galápagos to the party beat in urban Guayaquil, before following in the footsteps of the Inca in Ecuador's southerly neighbour, Peru. You'll see colonial wonders and archaeological gems in both Lima and Cusco, before spending a night up in the Andes and stepping on ancient sacred ground at the spine-tingling Machu Picchu.

Starting your adventure in Quito, Ecuador's capital, you'll take in the city's historic sights before sampling an exotic rainbow of fruit at a market. Fly over to the out-of-this-world Galápagos Islands to spot large tortoises, roam uninhabited isles and gawp at fantastical marine life in Darwin's stomping ground. Spend a night in the buzzy port city of Guayaquil before diving into Peru.

Unfurling from the craggy cliff-flanked coastline, Lima is glorious in all its chaotic charm, where modern high-rises rub shoulders with pre-Columbian temples and candy-coloured colonial gems. During your stay, visit the city’s clutch of art-rich galleries and insightful museums, before feasting on plates of ceviche washed down with punchy pisco sours – just save room for the silk-smooth Amazonian chocolate that you can learn more about on a visit to the Chocolate Museum.

It's then time to explore the once capital of the Incan Empire that's bejewelled with colonial architecture - Cusco. After getting to grips with the gargantuan history behind this city, you'll have the joy of exploring the Sacred Valley at your own pace, snapping some selfies with the area's hairy inhabitants at a llama farm on the way. Dotted with age-old ruins, your visit to the hangout of the Incas is enhanced with a night in an 18th-century monastery among the hills.

Itinerary

Day 1: Depart the UK for Quito. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel to check in.

Day 2: Arrive in Quito, transfer to your hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight in Quito.

Day 3: Go on a sightseeing tour of the historic parts of the city and visit a traditional market to taste a variety of locals fruit. In the afternoon, explore Quito at your own pace. Overnight in Quito.

Day 4: Transfer to the airport to fly to the Galápagos Islands. Arrive at Baltra airport and transfer to the island of Santa Cruz. Cross the Itabaca Channel on a ferry and then continue by car, making a stop in the highlands of Santa Cruz for lunch at a private ranch. Look for the giant tortoises near small lagoons and visit the lava tubes. Continue your transfer to your hotel in Santa Cruz. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight in Santa Cruz.

Day 5: Spend the day at leisure, or take an optional (chargeable) excursion to explore one of the nearby uninhabited Galapagos islands. Overnight in Santa Cruz.

Day 6: Enjoy exploring the island of Santa Cruz at leisure. In the afternoon, take a motor boat to the island of San Cristóbal. Enjoy watching the passing islands from the boat and look out for the varied marine life. Arrive on the island of San Cristobal, transfer to the hotel and stay overnight in San Cristóbal.

Day 7: Spend the day at leisure, or take an optional (chargeable) excursion to explore one of the nearby uninhabited islands. Overnight in San Cristóbal.

Day 8: Transfer to the airport to fly to Guayaquil. Transfer to the hotel on arrival and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight in Guayaquil.

Day 9: Transfer to the airport for a flight to Lima. On arrival, transfer to the hotel, and depending on the time, spend the rest of the day exploring at leisure. Overnight in Lima.

Day 10: Go on a city tour of Lima, exploring the districts of Miraflores and San Isidro before heading to the Historic Centre. Visit the impressive Convent of Santo Domingo and walk to the Plaza de Armas. Visit the Chocolate Museum to learn about the quality of Peruvian cocoa, and on the way back, stop in Parque del Amor for a photo stop. Overnight in Lima.

Day 11: Transfer to the airport to fly to Cusco. Arrive in Cusco, the former Inca capital, and transfer to the hotel. Spend the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight in Cusco.

Day 12: Set off for the Sacred Valley, an area in the Andean Highlands famed as the heart of the ancient Inca Empire. On the way, enjoy a photo stop at Awanakancha, a llama farm and centre of traditional Incan arts and crafts. Continue to the Sacred Valley, check into the hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure or go on an optional (chargeable) Sacred Valley Excursion to experience the best of the region. Overnight in the Sacred Valley.

Day 13: Head to the train station to board the Voyager Train to Aguas Calientes, from where you'll transfer to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu. Spend time discovering the ruins and being amazed by the terraces and different sections of the site. Return to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included) and later, board the train to Cusco. Transfer to the hotel. Overnight in Cusco.

Day 14: Transfer to the airport for a flight back to the UK.
