Marwell Hotel
Winchester, Hampshire
A unique safari lodge-style hotel on the edge of the South Downs National Park in Winchester, with three AA Rosette dining – includes a decadent seven-course tasting menu dinner and more gourmet fare
For wildlife lovers who fancy the idea of staking out tigers, cheetahs, snow leopards, giraffes and other endangered species without having to squint through a pair of binoculars, the setting of this safari-themed hotel couldn’t be more spot-on. You’ll be right opposite Marwell Zoo - the 140-acre park that was one of the first in Europe to focus on animal conservation.
The architect’s vision of bringing an African colonial-style lodge to the county of Hampshire has been a roaring success. There’s 68 guest rooms split between four connected lodges, all of which assure lovely woodland views. Expect rich colour tones, tasteful soft furnishings, carpeted flooring, and ultra-comfy beds.
Days can be spent taking long walks in the stunning South Downs National Park and visiting the nearby cathedral town of Winchester for its rather famous 700-year-old copy of King Arthur's Round Table. Post-sightseeing, head back here to savour modern English fare at the three AA Rosette-awarded restaurant, take a swim at the on-site leisure club, or book a tee time for either of the championship courses at the hotel’s co-owned East Horton Golf Club.
