A once-in-a-lifetime tour of culture-rich Peru in the footsteps of the Incas, including Lake Titicaca and Machu Picchu – includes all travel and more

Day 1: UK - Lima

Arrive in the capital of Peru and check into your hotel. Overnight in Lima.

Day 2: Lima

Go on a guided city tour and visit key colonial sites like Plaza Mayor, Government Palace and the Cathedral, before witnessing modern-day Lima and more. Optional four-course meal of classic Peruvian dishes and drinks ($75 per person). (Meals: breakfast)

Day 3: Lima - Arequipa

Fly to Arequipa, where you'll be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Optional city tour ($50 per person).(Meals: breakfast)

Day 4: Arequipa - Chivay

Take a bus to Chivay, stopping to admire the landscape en route. Check into your hotel and perhaps visit the thermal baths, three kilometres from Chivay (entry fee applies). Optional folkloric show with dinner. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 5: Chivay - Colca Canyon - Puno

Visit the Cruz del Condor viewpoint to hopefully spot condors, then return to Chivay, visiting villages en route. Transfer to Puno and check into your hotel. This is a good place to buy an optional gift for the islanders for tomorrow's visit, e.g. a kilo of sugar and rice and a bottle of oil. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 6: Puno - Lake Titicaca - Puno

A guided excursion to Lake Titicaca's Uros Islands and Taquile; visit a home and talk to the islanders. (Meals: breakfast, lunch)

Day 7: Puno - Cusco

Take a bus through the South Valley to Cusco, calling en route at Pukara, the altiplano area's most important and oldest ceremonial centre; Racqui's crumbling ruins; La Raya for breathtaking views; and 17th-century Andahuaylillas church. Check into your hotel in Cusco. Optional folkloric show with dinner (surcharge). (Meals: breakfast, lunch)

Day 8: Cusco

Take a half-day city tour of Cusco, seeing the Koricancha (Temple of the Sun); Sacsayhuaman, a labyrinthine-like place of stonework; Puca Pucara; and Tambomachey (Temple of Water). Optional cooking class (surcharge). (Meals: breakfast)

Day 9: Cusco - Sacred Valley - Cusco

A full-day tour of the beautiful Sacred Valley - visit Urubamba Valley's archaeological complex; Pisac's market; Yucay's Museum of Living Culture to learn about Incan techniques; Urubamba; and Ollantaytambo, with its narrow streets and canals much the same from the time of the Inca Empire. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 10: Cusco - Aguas Calientes

Hop aboard the Expedition Train to Aguas Calientes, seeing Ollantaytambo en route. In Aguas Calientes, you'll have time to explore. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 11: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco

Take in the mighty Machu Picchu at sunrise, before a walking tour of the citadel, before exploring on your own. Optional climb of Huayna Picchu mountain (surcharge). Return to Cusco via bus and train. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 12: Cusco - Puerto Maldonado

From Cusco airport, fly to Puerto Maldonado. Travel to Tambopata River Port for a 45-minute boat ride to your hotel. Check in, then scale the Canopy Tower to see the Tambopata River cutting through the jungle landscape and maybe some toucans and parrots. Dinner and an ecotourism lecture at the hotel. (Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 13: Amazon

Travel to Tres Chimbadas oxbow lake via boat and a 45-minute hike, to paddle in a catamaran and try to spot the river otters. See a rainbow of parrot and parakeet species at the parrot clay lick and go on an ethnobotanical tour to learn about medicine from the area's plants. There's an optional night hike to see and hear frogs and other active night mammals. (Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 14: Puerto Maldonado - Lima

Return to Puerto Maldonado airport and onwards to Lima, where you'll stay the night. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 15: Lima - UK

Today you'll fly home. (Meals: breakfast)
