A charming 18th-century building once part of a former salt mine on Sicily's west coast, with an optional suite housed in an old windmill – includes breakfast, dinner option and perks
See another side of Sicily with a stay near Trapani on the island's western coast, famed for its salt mining, and favoured for its spectacular coastline with steep cliffs interspersed with seemingly endless stretches of beach. Sitting close to all this natural splendour and surrounded by a unique landscape of salt flats dotted with windmills, I Mulini Resort occupies Casa Salinara, a historic 18th-century building which was once part of a former salt mine.
Creatively restored, it retains its very own windmill which houses the Museo della Salina, complete with original stone grinding wheel and windmill blades. The hotel is set in a green meadow surrounded by Mediterranean scrub, and you can walk directly down to its private beach and recline on a hotel deckchair beneath a parasol. If you fancy a little more action, there's a sailing school next door and you can also enjoy excellent windsurfing, kayaking and kitesurfing.
Rooms are sleek minimalist havens, designed with soothing lighting and restful hues, and the unique Il Mulino suite is housed in an old windmill. While facilities here are basic, you can make use of the restaurant and swimming pool down the road at their sister hotel, Baia dei Mulini.
Enjoying direct access to the hotel's private beach with your own umbrella and deckchair
Immersing yourself in history with a stay next to - or inside of - an ancient salt mine windmill
Soaking up the overwhelming sense of peace and tranquillity at the super-chilled retreat
