Ilulissat Icefjord

Discover Greenland’s breathtakingly rugged landscapes, with winter activities like a cruise on the Ilulissat icefjord and optional Northern Lights excursion, snowmobiling and more - includes airport transfers and breakfast

Day 1: UK - Ilulissat

Arrive in the snowy paradise of Greenland (see 'How to get there' for flight information'). You’ll be staying in Ilulissat, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its colourful houses and watery surrounds which are home to icebergs up to 15 metres high. You’ll be staying at your choice of hotels, either the Hotel Hvide Falk or the Hotel Arctic. Transfer from the airport to your hotel by public bus.

Day 2: Ilulissat

Pick up your arctic outfits after breakfast, which include thermal trousers, jacket and boots - trust us, you’ll need them! Today you’ll embark on a cruise through the Ilulissat fjord, weaving among the towering icebergs as you witness their majesty and listen to the thunderous sound of ice breaking into the freezing waters. Keep your eyes peeled for seals and whales, known to frequent these parts. Return to Ilulissat for a free afternoon. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 3: Ilulissat

Today you’ll set off into the wilderness on a husky sledding experience. Getting around by sleigh has been one of Greenland’s main forms of transport for 2000 years and today you’ll experience it in all its glory. Admire Disko Bay from a vantage point, and depending on the thickness of the ice, you might be able to cross the frozen sea. Head back to Ilulissat for a free afternoon. If you opt for the additional excursion package you’ll set out on a hunt for the Northern Light with an expert guide. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 4: Ilulissat

Spend your day at leisure today, wandering the colourful streets of Ilulissat. If you opt for additional excursions you’ll venture to Sermermuit in the morning, an ancient Inuit settlement, then spend your afternoon getting the adrenaline flowing with a fast-paced snowmobile adventure across frozen lakes. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 5: Ilulissat - UK

After breakfast, take a final wander around the city and a final gaze out at the icebergs, before hopping aboard the bus to the airport. (Meals: breakfast)

How to get there

Ilulissat is located on Greenland's west coast, about 500 kilometres north of the capital, Nuuk. There are two possible ways to get to Ilulissat from London: the first is to fly from London to Copenhagen, Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq, and Kangerlussuaq to Ilulissat. We recommend this option for your outbound flight.

The other option is to fly from London to Keflavik Airport, then stay overnight and fly from Reykjavik Airport to Ilulissat the following morning. Please note that Keflavik and Reykjavik are two different airports in Reykjavik. The flight to Ilulissat will be on Air Iceland Connect; this is the only non-Greenlandic airport which has direct flights to Ilulissat, operating twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Please note that if you choose this option, you will need to book an overnight stay in Reykjavik. We recommend this option for your inbound flight.

Good to know

Please be aware that the Northern Lights are a naturally occurring phenomenon, so whilst we hope you'll get to see them, we can't guarantee they'll oblige.

Please note that either an English-speaking escort or English telephone assistance (depending on group size) will be available to you for help with organising additional excursions and any queries you may have throughout your trip. All excursions will be led by an English-speaking guide.

Can't commit to booking right now?

Hold a date for only £25 while you decide.

  • Pay £25 to hold a date until the end of the sale.
  • If you choose to buy it, the money will go towards your purchase, if not, the cash will be credited to your Secret Escapes account.

Important: Please note, this is not a deposit, complete or guaranteed booking; holding the date simply prevents other members from swooping in and booking your preferred date while you're still having a think about it. Secret Escapes will not be liable for expenses incurred should that date not be available to book and a hold is cancelled.
