The town of Cirencester is known as the 'Capital of the Cotswolds, because it lies right at the heart of this quintessentially charming area. Despite its rich Roman past, it's often overlooked in favour of its larger neighbour Cheltenham, but this means it has remained a traditional Cotswolds market town. Head to the vibrant Market Place which holds regular farmers' markets, catch a play at the neighbouring Barn Theatre next to the hotel, or learn about the town’s fascinating Roman history in the Corinium Museum.

Further afield, you pay a trip out to a whole clutch of similar market towns and villages - perhaps Stow, Bourton-on-the-Water, or pretty Chipping Campden, enjoy a flutter at Cheltenham Racecourse, go birdwatching in the Cotswold Lakes or visit the fabulous Westonbirt Arboretum. Drive through chocolate-box villages in the Coln Valley and enjoy gloriously muddy walks in the Cotswold Hills.
Five-star booking service? You bet.
