Midland Road, Derby, Derbyshire DE1 2SQ

Derby is a pretty cathedral city in the very centre of the UK. Among its claims to fame are its reputation for having the best and biggest selection of real ales anywhere in the world – the city is teeming with old fashioned pubs in which to sample them - and the famous artist Joseph Wright – whose works can be seen in the excellent Derby Museum and Art Gallery.

The Cathedral Quarter is at the city's heart and is a warren of historic streets with some beautiful old buildings, shopping arcades, cafés and restaurants. Derby sits on the edge of the Peak District – an expanse of rolling marsh and upland much beloved of hikers and cyclists. Alongside Chatsworth House, there's a whole host of stately homes in the locale, including the Elizabethan Hardwick Hall and the 12th-century Haddon Hall.
