Say the word ‘Liguria’ and most people will think of the Cinque Terre’s clifftop-clinging villages, Genoa’s bustling ports or tiny, expensive Portofino. These are all fabulous highlights of this northerly region of Italy, but Rapallo, tucked away in a secluded bay overlooking the Gulf of Tigillio and the Portofino Peninsula, is a dreamy destination that far fewer tourists have heard of. From here, you can easily visit the aforementioned, more popular, spots, but also find plenty of hidden, out-of-the-way areas to enjoy the staggeringly dramatic coastline.

Rapallo is somewhat of a hidden gem of the Italian Riviera – a muse for writers, she is a classic seaside town with bright cerulean changing cabins, stripy umbrellas and sandy, palm-fringed sands. Brightly painted hotels and homes are arranged in terraces down to the seashore, so you’ll get that feeling of staying on the Cinque Terre, but without the crowds and the limited access.
Five-star booking service? You bet.
