A Cotswolds getaway in a Tudor-style mansion, with breakfast, afternoon tea and three-course dinner

As imposing as its name suggests, De Vere Tortworth Court is a Grade II-listed Victorian mansion towering over 30 acres of manicured parkland and its own flourishing arboretum. As if that wasn’t enough pleasant English greenery, it’s surrounded by the Cotswolds’ gentle hills and whisperingly quiet stone villages. You can nip into Bristol easily enough from this four-star Gloucestershire stately home for some urban bustle.

Although occupying the same site for centuries, the building was designed by renowned Gothic Revival architect Samuel Sanders Teulon in 1849. Compared to the exterior Tudor fanfare of slim turrets, chimneys and robust bay windows, the bedrooms have a comfortable and grounded present-day style.

De Vere Tortworth Court’s restaurant is a fabulous reminder of the building’s blue-blooded history. After a day of hearty rambling around the Cotswolds, make a beeline for the leisure club to soak in the heated indoor pool, sauna and steam room and smooth already fresh air-brightened skin with a facial, or book in for an indulgent mani-pedi or massage.
