A charming boutique inn in the heart of Hertfordshire, with dinner credit, breakfast and a bottle of prosecco

This former farmhouse in the heart of Stevenage dates back to the 16th century and was once home to John Thurloe, secretary to Oliver Cromwell. The handsome redbrick building retains plenty of its former character and period features and can be found on one of Stevenage’s most attractive stretches of road, lined with shops and restaurants.

Cromwell Hotel Stevenage’s recently upgraded bedrooms are decorated in regal colours like mustard yellow and teal, featuring countryside-inspired prints and tactile fabrics; at the end of a long day exploring you can snuggle up under a soft throw with a good book before dinner. The en-suite bathrooms are equally as swish, with glossy white and teal tiles and traditional fixtures – a nod to the building’s lengthy past.

The hotel’s onsite Brasserie Rump and Wade continues the traditional theme with well-executed gastropub classics like sharing boards of breads and charcuterie, burgers, steaks and a not-to-be-missed fish and chips made with beer batter, crispy skin-on chips, mushy peas and tartar sauce. The tavern and lounge area are great spots for chilling out with an ale or a wine from the hotel’s well stocked cellar.

Once you’ve satisfied your stomach at lunch or dinner (there’s a pretty top-notch breakfast offering too), you’ll find yourself well placed for seeing the sights of the local area. Nearby you’ll find Duxford Imperial War Museum, Woburn Abbey and the Safari Park. And don’t worry – should you need to work off your indulgent dinners you can take advantage of the hotel’s preferential rates at the local leisure centre just a few minutes away.

Good to know

This hotel has recently undergone a refurbishment. Please note that images of the bedrooms are up to date but the refurbishment is so fresh, images of the communal areas may be out of date.
