A year-round haven for all things alpine, the Valtellina mountains in Italy’s Sondrio province are a beloved destination for Italians and foreign visitors alike. You’ll find endless hiking trails for all abilities and inclinations, from scenic paths past mountain huts and glittering lakes, to more challenging routes passing across glaciers, jagged precipices, and dizzyingly high altitudes. Thrill-seekers can also enjoy the area’s network of mountain biking trails, as well as rock climbing, mountaineering, fishing and more. Come winter, the snowy landscape becomes a skiing paradise, with the slopes of Valmalenco at your fingertips and regular hotel shuttle services to a nearby cable car.

Presided over by the majestic Monte Disgrazia and Pizzo Bernina mountains (at an altitude of 3678 and 4050 metres respectively), Chiesa in Valmalenco is the area’s principal town, and a hotspot for hikers following the famous Alta Via route. A leisurely stroll here will take you past traditional architecture, quaint stone-built churches and a sprinkling of lively local eateries, while the surrounding region is studded with idyllic villages ripe for exploration. And if it’s a splash of luxury and cosmopolitan buzz you’re after, make a day trip to the glamorous resort towns of Livigno or St Moritz, both about two hours’ drive away.
