Location and what's nearby

Koningin Astridlaan 57, 9100 Sint-Niklaas, Belgium

In Sint-Niklaas, the capital city of the Waasland region, take time to stroll Belgium's largest Market Square, people-watch from the cafés, and peruse the stalls at Thursday's market that's been a city stalwart for five centuries. Early September sees the square fill with multicoloured hot-air balloons for the annual Vredefeesten. The working 17th-century White Mill is worth a visit too, as is the leafy 16th-century Walburg Castle, surrounded by a moat.

You're a 40-minute drive or train ride from hip Antwerp too, brimming with marvellous attractions. Dating back to the Middle Ages, it’s home to the Cathedral of Our Lady Antwerp, the modern Museum aan de Stroom, the Baroque Saint Charles Borromeo church and The Rubens House, former home and workshop of Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens.

A mix of traditional Flemish culture and Belgian modern life, Ghent is a 40-minute drive or slightly longer train ride in the other direction. Rub shoulders with locals at thriving markets, pretty squares, characterful drinking dens and hip boutiques. A half-hour drive north of the hotel reveals the Verbeke Foundation, a sprawling indoor-outdoor contemporary art space where anything goes.
