A super-scenic tour of India's beautiful Kerala, with vibrant city and tranquil lakeside stays, plus a houseboat cruise - all travel included

India is a mesmerising mix of intoxicating colours, sounds and smells, from dazzling fairy-tale Maharaja palaces and soft sandy beaches dotted with sacred sunbathing cows, to its chaotic cities pulsating with hair-raising rickshaw rides, car horns and overflowing train stations. The southwest coastal region of Kerala epitomises India's softer side with its laid-back attitude and slower pace of life, and with this holiday, you'll enjoy a thrilling tour through some the area's best bits.

You'll kick off with two nights in charismatic Cochin, staying at the elegant Crowne Plaza Kochi hotel, which boasts sweeping views over the city from the rooftop bar and grill. Stroll past spice warehouses, artisan's studios and hidden shrines as you explore the city. Head out on a half-day sightseeing tour of the city, visiting the 16th-century Jewish Synagogue, the Chinese fishing nets and St Francis Church, and take a traditional tuk tuk ride.

After an evening spent over a classical Indian dance show, you'll head to the small town of Periyar next, with its endless hillsides, spice-scented plantations and picturesque landscapes. You'll stop by a tea factory on the way and enjoy some traditional martial Kalaripayattu dance later that evening. A visit to a spice plantation the following day will see you learn about ancient spice traders and you'll get the chance to sample peppers, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and more. You'll also experience the Periyar Tiger Reserve and National Park from the beautiful waters of Lake Periyar on an afternoon boat ride.

You'll hop aboard another boat next, to spend one night upon Kerala's backwaters in a houseboat crafted from a traditional kettuvallam (rice boat). Cruise through narrow canals to discover lush paddy fields, pretty villages and hidden islets, before heading onwards to Kumarakom for two final nights in the 'Venice of the East'. Immerse yourself in the stunning natural beauty and panoramic views of Kerala's heartland of lagoons and palm-fringed lakes, before returning to Cochin for your flight home.
