Often overlooked in favour of charming Copenhagen or achingly cool Stockholm, Gothenburg is a lively, sociable city on Sweden’s breezy west coast. It’s got all the hallmarks of a great Scandinavian city: a waterfront setting lined with Neoclassical buildings in an artist’s palette of colours, sinuous cobbled streets, canal-side sun bathing when weather allows and a plethora of upscale bars. There’s plenty to see and do on a weekend break, from rattling between sights on the network of trams to strolling between coffee shops and hip boutiques, to visiting one of the many cultural events.

Avalon Hotel is located in the centre of the action on Kungsportsplatsen, a smart square bordered by a moat and lined with restaurants. Rooms are typically Scandi, featuring Arne Jacobsen chairs, and the restaurant serves an imaginative menu of new-Nordic cuisine with local ingredients featuring heavily. The bar is popular with locals, and on sunny days the rooftop swimming pool is the place to see and be seen, especially by pedestrians in the square below; the glass bottom juts out over the edge of the hotel.

Avalon Hotel’s guest rooms are an ode to Scandi design, with cool white walls and linens, design-inspired chairs, sleek bathrooms and a pop of colour. Superior rooms feature a bathtub in the bedroom, so you can watch television as you enjoy a leisurely soak. Deluxe rooms are located at the front of the hotel and boast floors softened by rugs from Kasthall – opt for a room with a terrace or with panoramas of Kungsportsplatsen Square.

Dining

The Avalon Restaurant & Bar is an excellent on-site option for when you want a light lunch or easy supper. Breakfast buffets are served here until 10am (later on weekends); in the evening, select from a la carte menus with ingredients sourced from around Sweden, including organic eggs. Choose from the three-course set menu and try classics like herb-fried veal with rosti and lingonberries, or go light with cured salmon and dill-creamed potatoes.

The Bar & Lounge is separate to the restaurant and is a great place to grab a drink before dinner; it also serves a snack menu of salads, burgers and charcuterie. Choose a bottle from the wine room, a well-stocked cave of unusual wines from around the world.

Wellness

The hotel’s rooftop heated swimming pool is a landmark sight in the city, with part of it cantilevered off the side of the building affording views of the street below through a glass bottom. The roof terrace has chairs and umbrellas with a bar for drinks.

Location

Centrally located in Gothenburg, Kungsportsplatsen Square is 800 metres from the Central Station and an easy walk to most of the city’s sights though the tight cobbled streets. Nearby you’ll find the Saluhallen food market and the Olhallen beer hall.
