A regal Cumbria stay in a grand motte-and-bailey castle, with breakfast, three-course dinner, a castle tour and a choice of historic rooms

Owned by Kings of England and Scotland throughout its rich history, Appleby Castle lies just 15 minutes away from the Lake District. The grand motte-and-bailey structure houses one of the last remaining intact Norman keeps and its Grand Hall dates back to 1454.

A stay here affords guests a unique chance to experience a living history, with 'behind the red ropes' access to the castle's treasures. Take a tour of the castle, delve deep into the dungeon, and glide through the great halls, medieval chapel and kitchen, culminating in a interactive medieval armour display inside the Norman Keep.

In the castle rooms and newly renovated cottages, antique furnishings, chandeliers, tapestries and heavy velvet drapes take you on a regal trip back in time, while Wi-Fi and en-suite bathrooms keep your feet firmly in the here and now. Appleby Castle bagged a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.
