A regal Cumbria stay in a grand motte-and-bailey castle, with breakfast, three-course dinner, a castle tour and a choice of historic rooms

Accommodation

Owned by Kings of England and Scotland throughout its rich history, Appleby Castle lies just 15 miles from the Lake District. The grand motte-and-bailey structure houses one of the last remaining intact Norman keeps and its Grand Hall dates back to 1454.

Among the old servants' quarters on the fourth floor, the Sackville, De-Morville and Atkinson rooms have high ceilings, antique wardrobes and en-suite bathrooms. The more spacious Russel bedroom features an ornate, super-king-sized bed of carved oak, plus an en-suite with double sinks, a walk-in shower and a large roll top bathtub.

The Evidence room sits in the North East tower, with commanding views over the Pennines and River Eden, while the Clifford room is dominated by a grand, 17th-century four-poster bed. The Tufton room sits on the castle's southern side, with views over the Inner Bailey and Norman Keep, and features two 17th-century beds. Lastly - but not least by any means - the Hothfield room also sits on the southern side; from this room, you'll enjoy views over the 12th-century Keep and the inner and outer bailey.

Amenities:

- Tea and coffee facilities
- En-suite bathroom
- Wi-Fi

Dining

The atmospheric oak-panelled dining room surely has a few tales to tell - it was built in 1454 after all - and the exquisitely presented plates hold the freshest of local ingredients. Guests in the mood for a lovely pick-me-up before dinner could opt for a tempting afternoon tea, too.

Location

You’ll have access to 27 acres of leafy walks, with residents ranging from butterflies and bees to kingfishers and red squirrels. See the castle from a different perspective on a hot air ballooning adventure, or tee off at Appleby Golf Club. Castle tours are also available, including those to suit paranormal enthusiasts, should you wish to brush up on your English history and discover the hotel's long heritage - some parts stretch back 900 years.
