A sensational South America tour discovering the natural wonders and ancient sights of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands and Peru – with all travel and excursions
Begin this fascinating tour in Ecuador’s ancient capital of Quito, a city constructed on the foundations of an Inca city and sitting high in the Andean foothills. Tour the Old Town area (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), where you’ll discover impressive cathedrals and 17th-century churches rubbing shoulders with European, Moorish and indigenous facades and pretty plazas.
Then it’s on to the stunning Galapagos Islands, the biodiverse island chain that led Darwin to his theory of evolution. The Galapagos are still changing geologically, thanks to periodic (contained) volcanic eruptions, but protected-area status has kept the region wild. On this trip you’ll have the opportunity to embrace your inner Attenborough and get up close and personal with sea lions, flamingos, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies and possibly even white-tipped sharks.
Peru’s dizzying capital Lima is up next. Get your bearings with an optional tour, including panoramic views over Huaca Huallamarca, Sant Domingo Convent and Plaza Mayor. Puno’s up next, with a stay near the epic Lake Titicaca – the world’s highest navigable body of water. Whilst here, you’ll take an excursion to the Taquile and Uros islands, where you’ll witness the beautiful clothing of the islanders, local crafts and agricultural traditions.
Then, you’ll move on to Cusco, taking in a few sights en route, including Andahuaylas and the ruins of Racqui. You'll also stop off to take in the views at La Raya – the highest point between Puno and Cusco. After a night in Cusco, you’ll move on to Aguas Calientes, from where you’ll visit the UNESCO-protected Machu Picchu – one of the Seven Wonders of the World. With two further nights in Cusco, you’ll have the chance to explore or to join an optional excursion, before heading back to the UK.
