Kos is a beautiful Greek island – one of the largest in the Dodecanese chain – boasting some immaculate beaches and warm Aegean waters. It's well worth making the 30-kilometre journey into Kos Town, the island's buzzy capital, which boasts a beautiful fishing boat-thronged harbour and lovely, traditional whitewashed buildings.

Kos has a long and intriguing history, and you'll find Roman ruins, Venetian palaces and Ottoman mosques as well as its stunning crusader castle to keep you entertained. There are a number of smaller islands near to Kos that make ideal day trips, including Nisyros, where you can walk in a volcanic crater.
