There are few better places from which to enjoy a sea view than a natural saltwater pool, set into the cliffside. Wander the Lido Promenade and in less than ten minutes you’ll come to the Doca do Cavacas Natural Pools, a small complex of natural bathing pools with direct sea access. Continue along the path and you’ll soon be at Praia Formosa. This beach of black sand and pebbles stretches out for almost two kilometres, and makes the perfect place to spend a day thanks to its seafront snack bars and restaurants. If you’re in the mood for some culture, the capital of Funchal is just a short drive away. Admire the 16th century cathedral, explore the lively Old Town (Zona Velha) and visit the Mercado dos Lavradores (a flower, fruit and vegetable market that’s on every day except Sunday).
