An ivy-clad manor house hotel in the southern Cotswolds, with an acclaimed spa and innovative dining – includes breakfast, dinner and a suite option

Accommodation

Housed in a Grade II listed building, and part of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux collection, this 19th-century manor house has been transformed into a boutique hotel that’s rich in charm and character – and has a Pride of Britain Hotels accolade to prove it. Behind its ivy-clad façade, Whatley Manor is home to 23 individually designed accommodation, an award-winning spa with a hydrotherapy pool, lounge bar and a duo of restaurants, including The Dining Room, serving up modern British dishes with innovative East Asian and French twists.

Located mainly in the manor house, the six Suites are a rich mix of country-chic charm and modern style; classic furnishings rubbing shoulders with contemporary art and chic pieces. A smattering of mod-cons and luxury touches are at your fingertips, from luxury cosmetics and king-size beds to Bang & Olufsen entertainment systems and MP3 music-streaming devices. Many suites benefit from pretty garden views, the luxury of a larger living space, generously sized bathrooms and a separate lounge and study area. Superior rooms are equally as elegant and, whilst smaller than the Suites, are still nice and spacious.

- Wi-Fi access
- Newspaper and selection of magazines
- Complimentary hire of DVDs from in-house library

Dining

Whatley Manor’s main restaurant is The Dining Room, a refined haunt headed up by chef Niall Keating, who brings his experience at a number of Michelin-starred places around the world to the innovative menu, infusing modern British dishes with Korean, Japanese and French twists. An in-the-know sommelier is on hand for wine pairings, while an elaborate tasting menu is the ultimate culinary experience for globetrotting gastronomes. For more laid-back eats overlooking the Stable Courtyard, the seasonally driven Grey’s Brasserie rustles up an eclectic mix of comfort food.

Spa

Given a five-bubble rating by the Good Spa Guide twice running, Aquarias Spa is home to an indoor-outdoor hydrotherapy pool, tepidarium with heated stone recliners, salt scrub showers and a jam-packed treatment menu flaunting top brands such as Natura Bissé, ila-spa, Lava Shells and Jessica Nails. There’s also a cluster of thermal cabins to turn the heat up on weary limbs, from a calidarium and steam grotto to a laconium and sauna, plus a wave dream sensory room to relax the mind and boost well-being. For action, the gym and fitness studio is the place to go.

Please note that guests must be 16 years old or over to use the spa facilities.

Location

Set in the southern Cotswolds town of Malmesbury, this beautiful abode is nestled among 12 acres of garden-dotted grounds and overlooks the rolling Wiltshire countryside beyond – perfect for walking, jogging and cycling (hire bikes are available). Throw yourself into the quintessential English lifestyle with a spot of clay pigeon shooting, horse riding, polo lesson or round of golf, or perhaps take to the skies to soak up the picture-perfect vistas from a hot air balloon.

Nearby, a string of chocolate-box Cotswolds villages are ripe for exploration, from the historic abbey of Malmesbury and the quaint boutiques and antique shops lining Tetbury, to Castle Combe – a knot of picturesque streets and honeyed buildings earning the title of ‘Prettiest village in England’.

Within 16 miles of the property is Cirencester, home to a Roman amphitheatre and a clutch of museums and shops, and the medieval village of Lacock, which has starred in the likes of the Harry Potter films and period dramas. The Roman city of Bath is a 35-minute drive away, worth a visit for its golden buildings, architectural gems such as the Royal Crescent and smattering of Roman baths.
