City breaks in Venice and Rome staying in two luxury hotels - breakfast, flights and a gondola ride included

Forget sleek minimalism and modern design, this two-part escape is about classicism, antique opulence and centuries-proven Italian style. With luxury accommodation at hotels that brim with vintage grandeur, you'll spend four or six nights exploring (by pastel-coloured Vespa, perhaps) some of Europe's most breathtaking relics and heirlooms.

Your holiday starts in Venice, with a stay at romantic 17th century residence, Duodo Palace. Located next to an age-old church in the labyrinthine centre, the hotel is a postcard image of the city. Murano glass chandeliers hang in the lobby and water taxis transport guests straight to the elegant, glass-doored entrance, through which you'll find original hearths, marble floors and typically Venetian ceiling beams. Not simply renowned as the City of Canals, there are more priceless works of art per square-kilometre here than anywhere else in the world; stroll the winding calli and view them in Baroque galleries creaking on stilts above the teal water.

The second half will be spent at the Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria, a prestigious five-star hotel located just a short distance from St Peter's Basilica. Keeping Venice on its toes, this palatial residence is home to one of the greatest private art collections in the world. Imperial furnishings and Sèvres porcelain sit alongside epic paintings in what is rated by the Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Awards 2012 as Rome's second-most luxurious hotel. Enjoy treatments from around the globe at the 2,500 square-metre Grand Spa, then sample three Michelin-star cuisine at exclusive dining room La Pergola.

Accommodation is in a genteel Classic room at Duodo Palace and a 50 square-metre Deluxe room at Rome Cavalieri (complete with sitting area and private balcony), both on a bed and breakfast basis, with a complimentary 35-minute gondola ride in Venice. Our offers are for four or six nights, with the holiday split equally between the two cities. Flights are included from London Gatwick, as well as an internal flight. Whilst transfers are not included, you will have the opportunity to add these after booking for a supplement.
