A rustic Scandi-chic chalet in Austria’s gorgeous Tyrolean Alps, with top-notch spa and mountain cuisine – includes breakfast, spa access, 30-minute massage and more

  • In skiing circles, St Anton am Arlberg is renowned, with snow-sure conditions and over 300 kilometres of pistes. But talk to walkers and watch their eyes mist over at thoughts of the Tyrolean Alps’ most beautiful routes, of which the Valluga Hotel is on the doorstep. From here, you can walk into town, to the lifts, and directly onto mountain trails.

  • The charming Valluga Hotel has a Scandi vibe – it’s owners are Swedish – and has just 26 stylish bedrooms enhanced with little Tyrolean touches, like faux fur blankets and stag’s heads. The restaurant is decked out in alpine finery, too, and serves muesli for breakfast and local dishes like schnitzel for dinner.

  • After a day of mountain biking or stomping up to mountain peaks, try a dip in the spa’s heated pool or sweat it out in the Finnish or infra-red sauna. Treatments are equally alpine-inspired, with foot massages and clarifying facials.

Highlights

Winter or summer (any season, in fact), St Anton am Arlburg’s Tyrolean charms and striking Scandi-style architecture draw visitors to enjoy time in the great outdoors among the surrounding mountain peaks. The resort is surrounded by some of Austria’s most varied skiing and is well connected to the rest of the area via cable car. In warmer months, the region is popular with hikers, so lace up your walking boots, grab some hiking poles and head for the hills. Guided hikes are available and there are options for all abilities and levels of fitness.

For something a little more energetic, hire mountain bikes to explore part of the 4,000 kilometres of routes, or scramble over the rocks at the protected via ferrata climbing route.
