Dig deep into vibrant Vietnam with visits to four of its biggest cities, including capital Hanoi and UNESCO-listed Hoi An, then sail across Halong Bay - includes breakfast, all travel and excursions

Ho Chi Minh City

Your South East Asian adventure starts in Vietnam’s largest city and former capital, a fascinating metropolis full of character, fascinating architecture, fabulous food and friendly locals. The city is full of impressively grand pagodas, designed in an incredibly ornate Chinese style, and lovely French-colonial houses. When you’ve had your fill of sights, head to some of the outer districts to sample real Vietnamese street food - best enjoyed sat roadside on a stool.

While you’re here, you’ll head out to the Cu Chi Tunnels to learn about the lives of Viet Cong, then drive back into the city for a half-day tour. You’ll also venture to the Cai Be Floating Market on a full-day tour including lunch at a local house and a traditional sampan ride.

Hue

Next, you’ll travel to a hotel set just a stone’s throw from the Perfume River in central Hue. This enigmatic city is another former capital, and its most impressive sight is undoubtedly the forbidden Imperial City, a magnificent royal palace complex which puts Buckingham to shame, which you’ll visit on a city tour alongside other sights.

You'll get to see the city by boat on a cruise down the romantic Perfume River, before visiting the elegant Thien Mu Pagoda along the riverbank; truly a site to behold. In the afternoon, your full-day city tour continues with a visit to the magnificent tombs of Emperor Khai Dinh & Tu Duc; then, it's off to dazzle your senses with a trip to the Dong Ba market and Imperial Citadel.

Hoi An

The next stop is a hideaway near Hoi An, famous for its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ancient Town. Lined with old timber-framed houses, this beautifully preserved trading port is the highlight of Vietnam for many travellers. Stroll the lantern-lit waterfront, cross the historic Japanese covered bridge, visit the bustling Hoi An market or spend your days blissing out on one of the white-sand beaches dotted along the coast.

While you’re here, embark on an excursion to My Son, a complex of ancient ruins tucked deep in a remote jungle valley and former centre of the Cham Kingdom.

Hanoi

Vietnam’s capital is up next; the chaotic culinary destination of Hanoi. From your location in a history-steeped neighbourhood, discover this intoxicating city on foot, being sure to spend time by the lake and at the notorious Hoa Lo Prison, the 'Hanoi Hilton'.

Other sights, which you’ll visit on an excursion, include the Temple of Literature, an impressive ode to Confucius, and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, dedicated to Vietnam’s city-namesake war hero and politician.

Halong Bay

Before your third night in Hanoi, you’ll venture out for an overnight sailing on one of the most luxurious cruises in Halong Bay. Staying in an exceptionally smart cabin with a private balcony, you’ll spend a day on emerald-green waters, passing jagged limestone islands and dramatic caves. Swim and kayak, splash about on a bamboo boat, have a go at squid fishing and Tai Chi, and watch a cooking demonstration - a taster of the gourmet Vietnamese dining you can expect onboard.

Good to know
