Stay at a charming abode in the historic market town of Thame, a half-hour drive from beautiful Oxford, with breakfast and afternoon tea

If Thame's high street looks strangely familiar, it's not just you - an award-winning and up-and-coming spot, it's been used as a location for iconic TV series Midsomer Murders. It's here, set amidst artisan butchers, bakers and tea shops, that you'll find The Spread Eagle Hotel - which shows off a somewhat older history dating as far back as the 16th century.

Over the years, this hotel's Grade I listed building has welcomed some highly illustrious former guests that include none other King Charles II and legendary author Evelyn Waugh. Today, it remains a focal point of the town, retaining century-old signage and intricately patterned red-brick walls for a stay filled with character.

There's more to this place than its charming facade, however: interiors offer plenty of imaginative yet utterly elegant touches, that tastefully contrast with the building's many original period features. An overall sense of heritage permeates every nook and cranny, with vintage furniture dotting the rooms and communal areas. Expect an elegant atmosphere in the restaurant, too, where the afternoon tea and Sunday lunch are not to be missed.
