A stylish hotel in a historic Manhattan building conveniently located near a slew of iconic landmarks

When Manhattan’s 29 East 29th Street first opened its doors as Martha Washington Hotel, it was to a very specific set of sophisticated women in early-20th-century society. Today, all are welcome here at this Renaissance Revival building, in a group, in a couple or alone, but it still has an air of elegance and exclusivity. The Manhattan outpost of a hotel chain whose L.A. location was Travel + Leisure’s number-one L.A. hotel in 2016, The Redbury New York is big on the vintage style and boutique vibes, and it's no wonder why – it's headed up by the same prestigious lifestyle hospitality company behind SLS Hotels, Miami’s The Raleigh and celeb-favoured restaurants and lounges throughout the states, including Katsuya, The Bazaar by José Andrés, Hyde Lounge and Cleo.

Chief among the high-end offerings here may be Marta. Not content to be your run-of-the-mill hotel eatery, this full-service restaurant received its concept and menu from Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group. There’s also Bar Marta, the sleek lobby lounge where bartenders mix craft cocktails and pour craft beer, as well as offering Marta’s menu. Your accommodation gets its own glamorous touch, spruced up with playful Victorian art, but you might not want to spend too much time here. One thing that hasn’t changed at all since the early 1900s is that the streets outside – formerly the capital of the New York music-publishing industry known as Tin Pan Alley – are abuzz with activity, and within a half-hour walk of both Times Square and Central Park.

Good to know

Please note that a resort fee of $30 (plus tax) per room, per night is payable directly to the hotel. The resort fee includes Wi-Fi; domestic phone calls; access to a local fitness centre; access to the coffee bar from 6.30-9.30am; and digital access to the New York Times and the Financial Times.

Accommodation

There are 265 accommodations here, and each is eclectic and a little spunky, featuring a hip color palette of black, white and red, as well as whimsical arrangements of Victorian cameo-style art on the walls. Count on plush bedding to sleep on and a roomy slate-tiled bathroom with a back-lit mirror.

Cosy and compact Standard and Deluxe Rooms range from 175 to 300 square feet. Standard rooms come with either one twin bed, for solo travellers, or a queen bed, perfect for two. Measuring between 350 and 400 square feet, the One Bedroom suites include a separate living room with a pull-out sofa, and their bedroom holds either one king or queen bed. If you choose the 400-square-foot Two Doubles option, the bedroom will instead hold two double beds, allowing the suite, including the pull-out bed for up to two, to sleep up to six.

Amenities:

- Wi-Fi access
- Flatscreen HDTV
- Bluetooth Gramophone speaker
- Ciel Spa bath products
- Italian linens
- Plush down comforter with 300-thread-count bedding
- In-room dining from Marta (during regular restaurant hours)

Dining

Heard of Danny Meyer? He’s the culinary visionary behind not only the Museum of Modern Art’s eateries and the legendary Gramercy Tavern and Union Square Cafe, but a certain Manhattan-born global chain called Shake Shack – and his Union Square Hospitality Group is the force behind Marta, the hotel's ground-floor restaurant. Just as its name plays on that of the hotel, this Roman-inspired pizzeria has a playful spirit, serving its fire-kissed thin-crust pizzas, meat, fish and vegetable dishes in a lively breakfast, lunch and dinner setting.

Bar Marta, meanwhile, looks to a different time and place for inspiration: its building’s early days, in the early 1900s. Hit up this lobby bar and lounge for an after-hours cocktail or craft beer, as well as any item from the Marta menu.

Newly opened in summer 2017, buzzed-about Caffe Marchio is a Roman-style café serving up coffee and a breakfast menu in the mornings, followed by a more savory lunch menu come afternoon. Expect traditional fare, from panini and pastries to pizza, tramezzini and contorni.

Last but not least, in a similar Roman-inspired vein, Vini e Fritti is the hotel's aperitivi bar, where you can sip Italian wines, craft beers, champagne, spritzes and traditional cocktails. There's also a menu of casual small plates, like marinated veggies and fritto misto.

Location

The hotel is set in an increasingly buzzed-about Midtown neighbourhood that’s known as NoMad (short for "North of Madison"). This area is north of Madison Square Park and south of the Empire State Building, and if you stay here, you can comfortably walk to both. Walk a little farther – a little less than a mile – to get to Times Square, or just hop on the nearby N or R train to get there in 15 minutes, tops. For that matter, these subway lines and others in the area will take you wherever else you want to go, uptown, downtown, east or west.
