A restored 19th-century coffee tavern turned boutique hotel in the centre of historic Warwick – includes full English breakfast and optional two-course dinner

Just a short stroll from the main square, the recently renovated Old Coffee Tavern is the perfect place to enjoy a city getaway in beautiful Warwick. Originally built in 1880 as a coffee tavern – a teetotal alternative to pubs for high-end locals – this boutique gastropub retains many original features, including an intricate Victorian facade, exposed brick walls and dark-wood floors. Tastefully restored rooms are the epitome of retro-chic, boasting muted colour schemes, oh-so-stylish en-suites and period touches such as antique dressing tables and original fireplaces.

You’ll be within walking distance of all the city’s main attractions, including its iconic poster child – the magnificently medieval Warwick Castle, which brings to life a 1,000-year history through flamboyant, family-friendly attractions. Literature lovers are well served here, too, as handsome Stratford-upon-Avon – birthplace of the Bard – is an easy 30-minute drive away. After a busy day of sightseeing, unwind in the rustic coffee tavern and enjoy a superb dinner of firm British favourites – admiring the vintage decor from your red-leather bar stool, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a bygone era.

Accommodation

Double rooms are contemporary chic at its finest, each individually decorated in muted tones of Farrow & Ball greys and duck egg blues. All boast handsome antique furnishings including dark-wood chests and desks, as well as a seriously sleek bathroom, finished in shiny royal-blue tiles and complete with an overhead shower.

Amenities:

- Wi-Fi
- Ironing facilities
- Flatscreen cable TV
- Tea and coffee facilities
- Hairdryer
- Bath amenities

Dining

Start your day in style with the full works – a proper full English breakfast – in the beautiful Art Deco restaurant, which includes some exquisite original features from its days as a coffee tavern such as tall ceilings, dark-wood floors and an internal windowed wall. Treat yourself to dinner from the inventive seasonal menu, which gives a fresh take on traditional British classics – think lamb shoulder shepherd’s pie, sticky toffee pudding and pecan ice cream, and on Sunday a choice of four mouth-watering roasts with all the trimmings. There’s an extensive wine and cocktail list, too, and you can enjoy a quick drink either inside or al fresco on the attractive patio (good weather permitting, of course).

Location

With a superb location just off the city’s main square, close to St Mary’s Church, the Old Coffee Tavern is a great spot to enjoy a couple of days soaking up Warwick’s heritage. A treasure-trove of gorgeous medieval architecture and charming cobbled streets, this historic town – frequently referenced by Shakespeare – boasts a number of cultural attractions, with its crowning glory being Warwick Castle. Just a five-minute walk from the hotel, this stunningly preserved fortress is more than just a relic – waxworks, jousting tournaments and daily trebuchet firings combine to bring the rich history of this regal home to life. If you want to learn more about the Bard, medieval Stratford-upon-Avon is just a 15-minute drive away, while Royal Leamington Spa, known for its natural hot springs, is under four miles away.
