A relaxing, boutique stay at an 18th-century bar-turned-guesthouse in the Welsh town of Laugharne, including breakfast and a suite option

There’s not a pub in Laugharne that can’t claim a Dylan Thomas connection. But it was at this 18th-century townhouse in Carmarthenshire’s “timeless, mild, beguiling island of a town” that the iconic Welsh poet and playwright spent many a lost afternoon nursing a pint of Buckley’s, reading the papers and bantering with the owners.

Built in 1752, the Grade II-listed building that put the South Wales township on the map was fully renovated in 2012 and is now a buzzed-about boutique hotel with 13 unique guest rooms, all of which are named after Thomas’ poems and local places. And The Brown's hotel itself isn't the only thing with a rich history and quirky customs, with the town of Laugharne boasting a magnificent castle along with literary festivals, estuary walks, a lively nightlife and plenty of cafes.

After a day of laid-back exploration, head to the fabulous hotel bar (that remains much as Dylan would have remembered it) and tuck into hearty Welsh-influenced cuisine, sink a few local ales and raise a glass to the literary icon with his special edition single malt. There’s also a Reading Room where you can learn more about the place that inspired the author to write his brilliant and haunting classic, Under Milk Wood.
