A modern, eye-popping London design-led hotel in hip Bermondsey and close to Tower Bridge

One of the capital's most up-and-coming areas, the alluringly cool, artist-hub of SE1 is having a pretty good time right now. And according to The Times Online, 'Bermondsey's first boutique hotel is the epitome of designer chic.' Located just south of the river, The Bermondsey Square Hotel boasts creative gastronomy and forward-thinking design. No wonder it fits in.

Step inside and a playful, retro decor marks this hotel as one-of-a-kind. The bedrooms pop with colour - mish-mashing fabrics and artworks for a distinctly new South London feel. A new lounge offers plenty of dining options and is the ideal pit stop for busy travellers.

Located near Tower Bridge and just a short walk from the cultural delights of Southbank, you're well-placed for enjoying the city's most established playgrounds. The hotel's close to transport links, making it super-easy to get around. There's plenty of new-wave pop-up treats in the immediate area too. Bermondsey's cult White Cube gallery is a must-visit, and Zandra Rhodes' hip Fashion and Textile Museum is peopled with sartorial lovelies most weekends.

Good to know

Please be aware that the hotel does not have a bar but a coffee lounge instead. However, guests can enjoy alcohol in their rooms. In addition, the restaurant doesn't serve pork and offers guests an alternative breakfast.

When you stay in these lovely rooms, you'll get more than you bargained for (in a good way). Each spacious Superior room includes a sleek work space and a plush Mattison bed, where you can sleep tight after a long day of sightseeing. There's also a separate wet room with a Grohe shower and Eco Boutique toiletries, adding those extra touches of luxury.

Head to the lounge area for an all-day dining menu covering the best of modern British food, as well as timeless classics - think fish and chips, or kidney bean and chickpea burgers. Light sandwiches and salads are also available here, as well as a pantry area with homemade cakes, pastries and drinks. The lounge is open from 11am-11pm.

The central location of The Bermondsey Square Hotel, just south of the River Thames, makes it an ideal place to stay - whether you want to explore London's main attractions or just enjoy the artsy local area. This fast up-and-coming postcode is becoming increasingly attractive to fashionable foodies - and is, of course, very close to the famous Borough Market, where you can sample and buy a fabulous range of fresh world foods from Thursday to Saturday. Also try Maltby Street market on a Saturday or Sunday for a smaller but equally atmospheric food market experience.

There's a fertile crop of contemporary, boundary-pushing art institutions here. White Cube gallery is right on your doorstep and the Southbank is just a short walk away, with Tower Bridge, the Tate Modern, The Globe Theatre and the National Film Theatre all within easy reach. To hit the shops you can catch the tube from Bermondsey or Borough and be in the West End within 15 minutes.
