A historic ivy-clad Suffolk hotel in Bury St Edmunds, with masses of boutique character and two AA Rosette dining – includes breakfast and suite options

Housed in a grand Georgian building whose facade is entangled with ivy, and flaunting a quirky, artistic interior within, The Angel Hotel achieves the perfect blend of traditional elegance and chic modern style. It's no wonder Charles Dickens and Angelina Jolie chose to stay at this boutique base in Bury St Edmunds (not together, obviously).

The guest rooms and suites here are large and impressive, with carefully chosen furnishings, colourful fabrics and luxurious amenities. The two AA Rosette-awarded Eaterie is the hotel's ultra-cool restaurant where a mish-mash of framed artwork lines the walls and beautifully-presented dishes come rich with exciting flavours and fresh ingredients. Elsewhere, try the Wingspan Bar in the 12th-century vault under the hotel, or treat yourself to an afternoon tea if you're feeling a little peckish before dinnertime.

You'll be staying in the very heart of Bury St Edmunds, too, so you can easily explore its cobbled streets, markets and cafés at your leisure. If you're in search of greener pastures, head out and discover the surrounding countryside, parks and forests, or drive down to the pretty Suffolk coast.

Highlights

You'll be staying in the very heart of Bury St Edmunds, so you're well placed for the discovery of some real country gems. Explore this pretty market town with its stunning cathedral, quaint shops and charming cafes or venture into the surrounding countryside for bracing walks and long picnics.

You can drive to the coast in roughly 40 minutes and have a day by the sea. The nearby cities of Cambridge, Norwich, Ipswich and Colchester are all worth a visit and are all approximately an hour's drive away. Thetford forest is a lovely place to go walking, horse riding or bike riding and is filled with wildlife, including deer.
