A Grade II listed Gothic Revival abbey in the leafy Worcestershire countryside with breakfast, dinner and more

Exuding a peaceful, harmonious air from its many years as a sanctuary for silent Benedictine nuns until as recently as 2008, Stanbrook Abbey is an imposing Grade II listed red-brick edifice with arched windows, built in the 1800s by leading architect Edward Welby Pugin. Since refreshed with a multi-million pound makeover, this is truly a unique place to wake up in.

Sitting on 30 acres in the lush ring of countryside encircling historic Worcester, just north of the invigorating Malvern Hills, and in the gateway to the Cotswolds, the hotel houses equally dramatic interiors. Long, arched cloisters with original diamond-tiled floors sweep you into atmospheric dining rooms and an elegant, quintessentially English living room befitting the likes of Jane Austen characters.

After treating yourself to a splendid afternoon tea in the newly refurbished calefactory, roam the blooming gardens, the romantic lake and the orchard. Cocktails in the new George’s Bar - built in honour of the new heir to the throne - set you up for a sumptuous dinner, before a deep and saintly sleep.
