A fantastic trip to Norway's Oslo and Bergen, with one of the world's most scenic intercity train journeys - includes breakfast, flights and an optional fjord excursion
Nature's been kind to Norway, gifting it breathtaking mountains and serene fjords. It's a place with a charm that's all its own, contrived from its Viking-laden history and atmospheric natural light, be it bright high summer or the dulcet winter dark. This escape takes in two of Norway's most popular cities, Oslo and Bergen, whisking you between both by railway – an experience of a lifetime.
You'll start with two or three nights in Oslo, staying in the peaceful St. Olavs plass, which lies just a short walk from many of the city's best sights, such as the Opera House, the National Gallery and the Town Hall. Slottsplassen and the Royal Palace, with its surrounding park, are just a stone's throw away, whilst the nearby harbour offers boat links to Bygdøy, where you'll find a plethora of fascinating museums. Opt to complete this extraordinary experience with a two-hour fjord sightseeing boat tour in Oslo, which will see you exploring narrow sounds, idyllic bays and a maze of islands lined with pretty summer houses.
Next, you'll hop aboard the train to travel some of the world's highest tracks as you journey towards Bergen on Norway's west coast. The Bergensbanen railway is a feat in itself, charging its way through 308 miles of tricky terrain and climbing some 1,200 metres to do so. An impressive 182 tunnels were forged through the landscape's gneiss rock, between which you'll watch the scenes roll by, be them serenely snow-capped or breathtakingly vast.
Arriving in Bergen, you'll make your way to your dead-central hotel, which sits on Vagen Bay. Bryggen, a UNESCO-protected wharf that displays a traditional style of architecture, is achingly close (you can even view it from parts of the hotel), while other attractions are within walking distance, such as Bryggen Museum, Bergen Museum and the Hanseatic Museum and Schøtstuene.
