Sunrises over temples, street food from vibrant markets and sparkling lakes in the elusive Myanmar: a nine, 13 or 16-night adventure with guided excursions, all travel and optional beach stays

Day 1: Yangon

You kick off with two days in Yangon, which lies in the south of Myanmar on the wide Yangon river. This developing city thrives on street markets, glittering temples and wide open spaces. After checking into Hotel G Yangon, spend the remainder of the day orienting yourself in Myanmar’s capital.

Day 2: Yangon

Explore downtown Yangon with a half-day Heritage Walk-excursion, which takes in a patchwork of 19th and 20th-century architecture. In the afternoon, take some time out for yourself; visit Karaweik Hall, a large theatre in the shape of a golden dragon on Kandawgyi Lake. Come evening, you’ll be taken to Shwedagon pagoda (the largest in Yangon) to participate in the lighting of 1000 oil lamps. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 3: Bagan

An early flight with take you to Bagan, a place peppered with thousands of ancient temple ruins. A guide will take you on a tour of its most mesmerising temples, such as the Ananda, Dhammayangyi and Sulamani temples. After a late lunch, you’ll head to one of the many sunset points to witness a spectacular sunset over the temples. (Meals: breakfast, lunch)

Day 4: Bagan

Rise early to watch one of the magnificent sunrises over the steadfast temples, or opt to join a hot-air balloon ride over the pagodas, should you wish to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience on this epic trip (chargeable). In the afternoon, you’ll join a group tour on e-bikes to discover some of Bagan’s lesser known but equally impressive temples. (Meals: breakfast, snacks)

Day 5: Kalaw

Transferring by private car, you’ll check in to Kalaw Heritage Hotel and have the day to explore this hilltop town and it’s temples, with their golden spires standing out against the emerald hills. Embrace the laid-back vibes and head to the market, or visit Hnee Paya, a temple which houses a 500-year-old gold-lacquered bamboo buddha. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 6: Kalaw - Inle Lake

Lace up your hiking boots for a three-hour trek through the wilderness: en-route, you’ll pass through the Danu village and witness the Danu hill tribes going about their daily activities. Arriving at Myin Dike, you’ll take a fascinating train ride through the land towards Inle Lake. (Meals: breakfast, lunch)

Day 7: Inle Lake

Prepare to be amazed by this floating town with a full day on the still waters. You’ll visit floating water gardens, shops and markets hovering on stilts, and see fishermen on their boats posing with their bamboo nets. You’ll stop at a Burmese cigar factory and see how they’re made, as well as feasting on a traditional Intha lunch. (Meals: breakfast, lunch)

Day 8: Inle Lake

With another half-day on the waters, you’ll visit the ruins of Indein to the south of the lake, before lunch with a local family. Once you reach the Nam Pam village, you'll take a canoe down the river, before heading back to your hotel. (Meals: breakfast, lunch)

Days 9 & 10: Inle Lake - Yangon (Offer 1)

After breakfast, you’ll transfer to Heho for your flight back to Yangon. Enjoy your last moments in the capital, perhaps re-visiting your favourite sights or finding off-the-beaten-track gems. After one more night at Sedona Hotel, you’ll catch your flight back to the UK. (Meals: breakfast)

Days 9-15 or 9-17: Ngapali Beach (Offer 2 & 3)

If you’re not quite willing to let your magical adventure end, fly west to Ngapali Beach, Myanmar’s most famed golden beach. Still a fishing village at heart, there’s a sweet juxtaposition between the painted wooden boats and swaying palms against the line of luxe beach pads and resorts growing from the ground up. Opt to spend either four or seven nights at Sandoway Resort and recharge next to the Bay of Bengal’s clear waters, before transferring for one final night in Yangon then flying home. (Meals: breakfast)
