The Maldives

The ultimate bucket-list escape: tour Japan's colourful cities and historic sights, from Tokyo to Kyoto, before discovering the entrancing beauty of an all-inclusive Maldives retreat - travel included

Day 1: Tokyo

Touch down in Tokyo, a heady metropolis bursting with culture. Transfer to your hotel, then start exploring this incredible city - why not start with a visit to one of the many food markets?

Day 2: Tokyo

Start off with a half-day city tour, visit the Shinjuku Love Statue, Harajuku and the Meiji Jingu Shinto Shrine. See the Imperial Palace and the historic neighbourhood of Asakusa, then finish the tour at the train station and spend the rest of the day exploring.

Day 3: Toyko (Mount Fuji)

See another side of Japan with an unforgettable excursion to the legendary Mount Fuji, which includes lunching at the View Restaurant and sailing along Ashi Crater Lake. More nature awaits at Hakone and the volcanic Owaku-Dani Valley, before returning back to the capital. (Meals: lunch)

Day 4: Kanazawa

Use your Japan Rail Pass to ride to Kanazawa, a historical gem with castles and traditional Japanese culture: visit Kenrokuen, a 17th-century castle garden, where you'll be amazed at the traditional aspects of Japanese culture.

Day 5: Kanazawa

Spend today exploring Kanazawa on a self-guided tour by bus, during which you’ll get an overview of the city and its Japanese architecture. Soak up the artistic atmosphere with a traditional Gold-Leaf experience, where you'll be served refreshing tea at Kikentei.

Day 6: Kyoto

Use your Japan Rail Pass again to get to Kyoto, capital of the Japanese Empire for 11 centuries. Start exploring at your own pace, perhaps with delving into geisha-culture with a visit to Pontocho.

Day 7: Kyoto

Set off on a half-day tour this morning to visit the Niki-jo Castle, Kinkauji Temple, the Kyoto Imperial Palace and the Kitano-Tenmangu Shrine, then spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 8: Kyoto

Spend the day at leisure. Why not head to the iconic Bamboo Forest or walk through the tranquil Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. Alternatively, opt to explore two World Heritage sites in Nara by taking the Kintetsu Express train. You'll encounter wild deer up close while walking through Nara Park, and see one of the world's largest wooden temples, Todai-Ji Temple (£57 per person).

Day 9: Kyoto - Malé (night on board)

Use your Japan Rail Pass to travel to Osaka Airport, where you'll catch an overnight flight to Malé - the capital of the Maldives.

Day 10: Maldives

Arrive in Malé and transfer to your all-inclusive resort to check in. Spend the rest of the day at leisure; unwind with a massage by the beach or snorkel in the crystal clear waters. (Meals: all-inclusive)

Days 11-14: Maldives

Spend these days at your own pace, relaxing amidst the postcard-perfect Maldives. White sands, turquoise waters, swaying palms and all-inclusive board will leave you wanting for nothing. After breakfast on your last morning, you'll be transferred to the airport for your flight home. (Meals: all-inclusive)

Good to know

If road conditions or unforeseen circumstances restrict the ascent to the 5th station of Mount Fuji, you will instead travel the highest elevation possible considering the circumstances. The same also applies for the cruise on Ashi Crater Lake; if conditions or circumstances prevent sailing on the lake, alternative visits and experiences will be taken to replace the activity.

If the advertised hotels are not available they will be replaced hotels of a similar location and standard.

Please note that your outbound/inbound flight is/may be overnight, so please bear this in mind when planning the time you'll be away for.

Please note that at the time of booking, your name must be filled out exactly as per your passport (including any middle names). This is in order to accurately book flights and for any required visa invitation letters.

Can't commit to booking right now?

Hold a date for only £25 while you decide.

  • Pay £25 to hold a date until the end of the sale.
  • If you choose to buy it, the money will go towards your purchase, if not, the cash will be credited to your Secret Escapes account.

Important: Please note, this is not a deposit, complete or guaranteed booking; holding the date simply prevents other members from swooping in and booking your preferred date while you're still having a think about it. Secret Escapes will not be liable for expenses incurred should that date not be available to book and a hold is cancelled.
