Picturesque rural escapism, chic interiors and triple AA Rosette-awarded dining near Ludlow - including breakfast and optional three-course dinner

The historic market town of Ludlow in Shropshire, once described by John Betjeman as “the loveliest town in England'', is famous for being a foodie heaven, with gourmet festivals, Michelin-starred restaurants, farmers' markets and gastro pubs galore. Add to this beautiful walks in the surrounding countryside, historic country houses and cider farms, and it still offers idyllic English living at its best. Immerse yourself in all this and more with a blissful rural stay at the aptly named Old Downton Lodge, a few miles out of town.

Gazing towards the Hereford hills, Old Downton Lodge's picturesque collection of medieval, half-timbered and Georgian buildings are grouped around a herb and flower-filled courtyard. Within its immaculately restored walls, you'll find a cosy lounge housed in the former stable, with wood-burning stoves, beamed ceilings and timber floorboards, where you can hunker down after an exhilarating day in the great outdoors. Enjoy a warming tipple at the snug, sociable bar and get to know fellow guests.

Old Downton Lodge's pride and joy, however, is its medieval hall-style restaurant, holder of three prestigious AA Rosettes. Its extensive tasting menu of locally sourced fare (the creation of renowned head chef Karl Martin) attracts diners from far and wide. Serenely satisfied, pad over to your room, which oozes individual character and is lovingly kitted out in contemporary-meets-traditional English country style. Also on site is a museum (housed in an ancient building of uncertain date), complete with original stone cider press.
