A phenomenal full-length New Zealand discovery, with a Milford Sound fjord cruise, a scenic TranzAlpine train ride, flights, and eight-day car hire

Day 1: UK - Christchurch

You'll arrive in Christchurch, the biggest city on the country's South Island and known for its quaint English heritage, old-school trams and peaceful gold-sand beach. The catastrophic 2010 and 2011 earthquakes shook the city to its core and many historic buildings were ruined, but new ones are mushrooming and local resilience is yet another sight to behold.

Day 2: Christchurch

Spend another day soaking up the sights in Christchurch. Don't forget to ride the Christchurch Gondola cable car to the summit of Mount Cavendish for brilliant city views.

Day 3: Christchurch - Franz Josef Glacier

Today you'll board your TranzAlpine train, crossing the South Island from east to west in around five hours and traversing the monumental Southern Alps. On arrival at Greymouth, collect your hire car and drive two hours down the coast to Franz Josef Glacier - a small town backed by mountains and within easy reach of Westland Tai Poutini National Park, a dramatic expanse covering 1,320 square kilometres of remote wilderness from mountain to shore.

Day 4: Franz Josef Glacier - Queenstown

Today you'll drive around five hours through astonishing scenery to Queenstown. Set on the pretty shores of Lake Wakatipu, it's known for its mining history, vineyards and sports. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 5: Queenstown

From here you'll enjoy a full-day sightseeing tour of Milford Sound, a superb fjord surrounded with rainforests, waterfalls and the spectacular Mitre Peak, and home to all manner of endearing wildlife - from dolphins to fur seals. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 6: Queenstown

Spend the day wine-tasting at different vineyards or soak up more of the splendid outdoors. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 7: Queenstown - Lake Tekapo

Today you'll drive three hours north to peaceful Lake Tekapo, skirting the mountains as you go. Part of the UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve, stargazing is a must here.

Day 8: Lake Tekapo - Christchurch

You'll do your final South Island drive back to Christchurch today, before spending your last night in the city.

Day 9: Christchurch - Wellington

Today you'll deposit your hire car and either take a coach (if departing the UK between 1 and 22 September) or a TranzCoastal train (if departing the UK between 23 September and 31 March) and ferry to Wellington. You'll have two nights to get under the skin of this bite-sized, culture-crammed city.

Day 10: Wellington

Enjoy time discovering the hilly harbourside capital, from the Parliament buildings and the iconic Beehive right by your hotel to the nearby Wellington Botanic Gardens and the buzzy waterfront.

Day 11: Wellington - Napier

Picking up your hire car, you'll motor around four hours north to Napier, a seaport city with sigh-worthy Art Deco architecture that's been wonderfully preserved since the 1930s. In the midst of Hawke's Bay wine region, this is the place to start sipping.

Day 12: Napier - Rotorua

Today you'll drive almost three hours to Rotorua, an incredible geothermal hub of mud pools and hot springs in the Pacific Rim of Fire.

Day 13: Rotorua

After plenty of restorative thermal bathing, you might also choose to uncover Māori history and customs in one of the nearby villages (by tour only).

Day 14: Rotorua - Auckland

You'll drive your final stretch of around three hours north to waterside Auckland, often rated as the city offering the best quality of life on the planet.

Day 15: Auckland - UK

It's time to wave farewell to New Zealand's abundant beauty and fly back to the UK.
